PRELUDE
CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 139:7-10)
Where can we go from God’s spirit?
If we ascend to heaven, God is there; if we make our bed in Sheol, God is there. If we take the wings of morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, Even there God’s hand shall lead us, and God’s right hand will hold us fast.
GATHERING PRAYER
Almighty God, your son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world. May your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; for he lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
HYMN God of the Sparrow # 272
CALL TO CONFESSION Let us approach God with confidence, trusting in God’s grace as we humbly confess our sins.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, you know us better than we know ourselves. You know our sins even before we confess. Your knowledge is wonderful, but also challenging. We’d much rather avoid painful truths and deny our role in wrongdoing.
Help us face our failings so we can move forward .
WORD OF ASSURANCE (Psalm 103:17)
“The steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.” Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Amen.
SONG OF PRAISE Gloria Patri #579
PASSING THE PEACE
May the peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.
INTERLUDE
Word
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION (based on Psalm 19:14)
Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. As we approach your Word, may we be ready to receive the message you intend for us today. Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. 5 You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. …
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand--
when I awake, I am still with you.
John 1:43-51
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked .“Come and see,” said Philip. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus said, “You believe[a] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you[ will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
SERMON Will you go, if He leads you?
The previous scriptures focused on Jesus’ baptism. Our scriptures this week is focusing on starting to gather together the disciples that will become his students. In verse 42 Jesus has started to gather his disciples.
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
The three of them came from the northern shores of the Sea of Galilee.
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
We notice that Philip, not Jesus goes looking for Nathanael, and he is excited to tell him that they have found Jesus the one Moses wrote about. Here Jesus is not called the Son of God, but the son of Joseph, Jesus of Nazareth. Questions for you to think about. Why is Jesus called the son of Joseph, not the son of God? Is this to point out his humanity? Could they possibly think Jesus is a prophet?
Deuteronomy 18:15 is the verse that refers to Moses.
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.
46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
This is interesting. Huh, did they have rivalries and prejudices way back then? Nazareth was an unknown town off the beaten path. We wonder did it have a not so favorable reputation?
“Come and see,” said Philip. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
We need to remember that Jesus knew Nathanael before he was born. In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord said in Jeremiah 1:5 says: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born; I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Here is another question for us, did the Lord know us before we were born? Have we been set apart also? Wouldn’t have been interesting to see the look on Nathanael’s face when Jesus made the comment about no deceit? I formed you in
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Do we wonder is Nathanael racking his brain trying to figure out how Jesus knew him? Did he study Jesus’ face to see if recalls seeing him somewhere before?
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
Nathanael became a believer and a dedicated follower at that time. He did not see a prophet, he saw the Son of God.
50 Jesus said, “You believe[a] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[b] you[c] will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’[d] the Son of Man.”
Nathanael was present at the time Christ returned to heaven. Who was this Nathanael? I don’t recall the name Nathanael being one of the twelve disciples, do you? According to a little digging and research, Nathanael was Bartholomew. Now that name rings a bell as being one of the twelve. We do not read much about Bartholomew in the bible. According to my research he was dedicated and a martyr.
What can we take from these scriptures for us today?
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
Do we believe that Jesus is the one Moses wrote about? Is Jesus the one true Messiah? Have we accepted Jesus as our Savior?
46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
Sometimes we speak before we think. We put our mouth in gear before our brain has thought things through. Are we judgemental? Are we prejudice? Are we bias because of things we have heard? Even if we are not sure if they are true.
50 Jesus said, “You believe[a] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
Have we ever asked ourselves, “What do we believe and why we believe what we believe?”
Our title: Will you go, if He leads you?
God does not give the work to those who are always the best person for the job. I consider me one of the least qualified or educated to lead a worship service, but as the song says, Here I am Lord. I did not choose to become a pastor, God did. I could have continued to resist God’s call. I did that for over twenty years.
If God is calling you to do something, don’t resist. God will give you what you need to do what he asks you to do. Do you remember the Holy Spirit? God has filled His people with the Holy Spirit to be able to do His will. I can see a small child’s response to this. God will give you super powers!
Believe this as I know it is true. Let God prove it to you. If God urges you to do something, pray and ask his guidance. Don’t ignore God. I don’t think we want Jesus to ignore us in front of his Father, do we? We do not know when Christ will come back for his church? We need to serve God each and every day, until he comes again. Can we say, “Here I am Lord!”
Amen
HYMN Just as I Am, Without One Plea #370
PASTORAL PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen
OFFERING OUR GIFTS AND OUR PLEDGES TO GOD
*DOXOLOGY Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow #592
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Holy God, these offerings are only a portion of all that you have given us. We gratefully present these gifts and entrust them to your work in this world. May our gifts share the good news of the gospel to those who are in need. May these gifts help unburden those with the heaviest of loads. Amen.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Brief Statement of Faith)
We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation.
Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.
